Statins reduce total cholesterol as well as LDL cholesterol in blood. LDL cholesterol is believed to be the "bad" cholesterol that is primarily responsible for the development of coronary artery disease. Reducing LDL cholesterol levels retards progression and may even reverse coronary artery disease. Atorvastatin also raises the concentrations of HDL "good" cholesterol that protects against coronary artery disease and reduces the concentration of triglycerides in the blood.

High blood concentrations of triglycerides also have been associated with coronary artery disease. It can raise triglyceride levels and may increase your risk of liver damage. There are many other drugs that can increase your risk of serious medical problems if you take them together with atorvastatin.

Tell your doctor about all medications you use. This includes prescription, over-the-counter, vitamin, and herbal products. Do not start a new medication without telling your doctor. There have been rare postmarketing reports of fatal and non-fatal hepatic failure in patients taking statins, including rosuvastatin. If an alternate etiology is not found, do not restart rosuvastatin calcium tablets. Active liver disease, which may include unexplained persistent transaminase elevations, is a contraindication to the use of rosuvastatin calcium tablets [ see Contraindications 4 ].

In patients taking coumarin anticoagulants and rosuvastatin calcium tablets concomitantly, INR should be determined before starting rosuvastatin calcium tablets and frequently enough during early therapy to ensure that no significant alteration of INR occurs [ see Drug Interactions 7. These findings were more frequent in patients taking rosuvastatin calcium tablets 40 mg, when compared to lower doses of rosuvastatin calcium tablets or comparator HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors, though it was generally transient and was not associated with worsening renal function.

Based on clinical trial data with rosuvastatin calcium tablets, in some instances these increases may exceed the threshold for the diagnosis of diabetes mellitus [ see Adverse Reactions 6.
